PFO participates in a regional workshop on intergenerational dialogue in which young people shared their needs and the situation of young people in their countries, where young people said it is necessary to pay more attention to their opinion and involve them in decision-making.
On 7-9 June 2023 in Amman, Jordan, the representative of Peace and Freedom participated in a workshop on Intergenerational Dialogue organized by Swedish Dialogue Institute for the Middle East and North Africa, where youth from Iraq, Jordan, Yemen, Libya, Algeria, Syria and Egypt represented the MENA coalition and youth-led civil society organizations.
Below are the most important events that took place during the days of the program:-
The first day of the workshop included a number of concepts on the role of youth in peacebuilding and policing processes in the Middle East and North Africa, in addition to discussions focused on what distinguishes the young generation in the Middle East and North Africa, the challenges facing Arab youth to participate in decision-making, the priorities of youth in the region, and other questions and issues.
On the second day, the members of the regional coalition participated side by side in a working dinner that brought together a number of international organizations and donors in the presence of Jordanian Minister of Youth Mr. Mohammed Salameh Fares Al-Nabulsi, where the minister stressed the importance of the role of youth in decision-making and in turn disclosed a national plan that Jordan will adopt in early 2024 on the youth, peace and security agenda (Security Council Resolution 2250).
Representatives of the United Nations, representatives of the European Union, the Swedish Embassy in Jordan, representatives of the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA), the Swedish Folke Bernadotte Academy (FBA) and NGOs were also invited.
The third day concluded with a joint meeting between members of the MENA Coalition on Youth, Peace & Security and the Jordanian National Coalition for Youth, Peace and Security, where both coalitions presented their objectives and organizational structure, in addition to future plans and joint cooperation mechanisms to advance the implementation of the agenda of Resolution 2250 in the Arab countries.
The purpose of this program was to highlight the importance of implementing the agenda and pillars of Resolution 2250 as well as opening channels for intergenerational dialogue.
The Resolution 2250 is a thematic resolution that deals with the topic of youth from an international peace and security perspective. Recognizing the youth's efforts in peace building, it provides a set of guidelines upon which policies and programs will be developed by member states, the UN and civil society. This global policy framework, adopted by the UNSC in December 2015, explores how conflict impacts young people's lives and what must be done to mitigate its effects, as well as how youth can be meaningfully included in creating peaceful communities. This resolution talks about five key action areas/pillars: Participation, Protection, Prevention, Partnership and Disengagement and Reintegration. These five pillars and the resolution itself promote a new narrative of young people with regards to peace and ensures legitimacy and accountability.
