Peace and Freedom Organization in collaboration with Norwegian People Aid, supported a male and female activist to conduct a workshop on the rights of female workers in Hawija district-Kirkuk province. The workshop, which was held on 26/10/2024, addressed the rights of female workers according to the Iraqi Labor Law No. 37 of 2015 and highlighted the obstacles that limit women to join trade unions. A total of 29 women aged 15 to 35 attended the workshop.
During the workshop, participants were introduced to the definitions of work, worker and employer under the Labor law, along with working conditions, occupational safety and health standards. Discussions included an overview of workplace protection for women, including articles 84-93 on harmful work, the right to leave and maternity rights. With this, participants discussed reasons for the low participation of women in trade unions, citing the influence of societal norms and culture as well as limited opportunities in unions. Finally, informative brochures were distributed to the participants and the Agricultural Union in Hawija district to spread more awareness in the community.
This initiative is part of the (Improving Human Rights Conditions and Enhancing Democratic Participation) project, implemented by the Peace and Freedom Organization in partnership with Norwegian People's Aid.
