ERBIL – April 2026
The Peace and Freedom Organization (PFO) has released a critical report documenting a dangerous surge in femicide across the Kurdistan Region and Kirkuk.
Key Highlights:
-
Rising Mortality: 29 women were killed between January and mid-April 2026.
-
Recent Spike: 9 fatalities were recorded in the first two weeks of April alone.
-
Obstacles to Justice: The report identifies tribal mediation (Sulh), political interference, and media restrictions as major factors allowing perpetrators to evade punishment.
PFO warns that these crimes reflect a systemic crisis rather than isolated incidents. We call on the government to strictly enforce Law No. 8 (2011), end tribal interference in the courts, and immediately strengthen protection mechanisms for women at risk.
